On Monday September 20, 2010, the UN held the Equator Initiative Awards Ceremony for the 25 most outstanding projects in the world that contribute to environmental conservation and community development. Kapawi Ecolodge was part of this select group and was also awarded a special recognition for being placed as one of the top five projects worldwide.
The ceremony was held at the Museum of Natural History in New York. Kapawi Lodge was built in traditional Achuar style and is owned and operated by the Achuar people of Ecuador. This beautiful eco-tourist lodge has also been recognized by National Geographic. Located on the southeast border of Ecuador, Kapawi Lodge is in the pristine Upper Amazon Basin of Ecuador.
